What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Modern car keys contain unique chips that are specific to each vehicle, unlike older keys. This keeps thieves from taking the key and turning on the car.

The keys are usually purchased from a dealership or copied by a locksmith. The procedure for programming the key is different for each manufacturer and involves turning the key to the on position, without triggering the engine, then removing it within a predetermined time frame.



Transponder Codes

Like its name suggests, transponders send out an encoded signal that contains the four-digit code when it is interrogated by air traffic control. This signal is known as a SQUAWK code and forms the basis for aircraft identification on radar screens. It can also be used to relay a specific message to the air traffic control system in a crisis or to notify controllers of changing weather conditions. To ensure greater security, it is recommended that PINs be at least 6 digits long and contain both numbers and letters. Certain OEMs also require PIN codes for the aftermarket key programmer to ensure security to prevent unauthorised users from stealing data from the modules.

VIN Numbers

VIN numbers are used to identify vehicles and provide a wealth of information about them. VIN numbers are unique to every vehicle on the planet and are not applicable to alien vehicles (or whatever). The 17 digits in the VIN code contain an array of letters and numbers that can be decoded in order to reveal important information about your vehicle or truck.

Then, the entire VIN will be converted back to its original format by multiplying each weight by 11. If the result is equal to the check number, then the VIN is valid.

Data Transfer
